About The Team

The University of Wisconsin's Club "A" team is the most competitive level of the three "club" hockey teams. Not to be confused with the Women's Varsity program, the "A" team competes in the ACHA Women's Western Division. The ACHA is comprised of more than 20 teams from across the nation). Although the team is competitive and has high expectations each season, there is more to life than hockey. The club teams allows players to further their hockey careers while allowing them the time to focus on academics and have the opportunity to do other things throughout the season.

• Roster: The team will carry a maximum of 15 skaters and 2 goalies.
• Practices: The team practices twice a week on ice and holds off-ice condition as well throughout the season. Depending academic schedules, there is flexibility to miss practices.
  Practice begins early in September
• Games: The team plays 20 to 30 games each year.
• Travel: The team plays about six weekends on the road. Games are played as far as Minneapolis, MN; St. Cloud, MN; Ames, IA: Marquette, MI; East Lancing, MI; Chicago, IL and St. Louis, MO. Typically, only a single overnight is required. Transportation is provided by the University. The players are responsible for lodging and food.
• Tryouts: The team is selected by the "A" team coaching staff. Only players who demonstrate the necessary hockey skills and positive attitude are considered for the team. Players are evaluated in the first three to four practices and the team is selected by late September/early October. Should players be selected, they must commit to 50% of the team dues to ensure their spot. A roster spot from the previous year does not guarantee a roster spot for the following season. Players in some cases may even have to adjust to a different position to fill the roster.
• Academics: The ACHA requires specific academic achievements are met each semester. Failure to maintain minimum requirements affects that players' eligibility. Academic rules can be found in the ACHA rule book.
• Dues: The fee to play on the team is about $300 per player. Dues are split into two payments (fall and spring semester). The team participates in several fundraisers to help pay for dues.
• Schedule: Games begin in mid-October and run through early March. There are two breaks. Two weeks around Thanksgiving and about a five-week break from early December through mid to late January for the holidays. Depending on the schedule, there may be an open weekend here or there without games. The season is about five months long, but is broken up nicely to allow you to have a life outside of hockey.
• Competitiveness: The "A" level team is very competitive and places high values on competing in the ACHA national tournament each year.
