March 3-4: It took 64 minutes across two games before either team could net the first goal. The Badger club and University of Minnesota skated to a 0 - 0 tie on Saturday and lost 2 - 1 on Sunday. A very defensive weekend for both squads playing in Kasson, MN (Rochester, MN).
The Badgers end the regular season with a 16-6-1 overall record (6-3-1 in the ACHA). The tie is their first this season. Last year the club had six ties.
Both teams had many opportunties to win Saturday's game, but no one play could finish it. Melissa Wilking made a back door glove save on a two on zero play with less than one minutes left to diminish any last minutes efforts by the Gophers. UM outshot the Badgers 33 to 16 and controlled a good portion of the game. "Minnesota has a short bench, but a lot of talent and speed... especially at defense. We had our opportunities to score, but could not capitalize. We did not get as many quality shots as they did, however Wilking was on her game keeping the score at zero"-uschan.
Back at it on Sunday, both teams battled for the first goal. UM picked a errant pass on a neutral zone regroup and headed in to score a shorthanded goal. "We have not been that successful on the PP this year... We have the talent, we are just not clicking"-uschan. UW wore down the short Gopher bench and had many opportunties and answered back on a one-timer from Kelly Vruwink (native of Rochester, MN). "A great play... Elisha Cohen made a great dump into the zone and the Vruwink line headed out on the forecheck lead by Jen Starbuck who fed Vruwink in the slot... it was picture perfect!"-uschan. UM scored a late third period goal and held off the Badgers for the win.
